Why the Disneyland Paris book is so Great, Part Two: DLP From Above

In my previous article about the Disneyland Paris, From Sketch to Reality, book i've shown you the great renderings of the DLP that never was which are include in the book. Today, i will show you another type of great documents which you can also find in the book and it is stunning pictures of Disneyland Paris seen from above. And all these pictures were shot by aerial photography master Yann Arthus Bertrand who did a lot of famous books including the acclaimed "Earth from Above". No one is better than Arthus Bertrand for aerial pictures and we were extremely lucky to have pictures from him in the book!

Above, a fantastic view showing Big Thunder at sunset and a part of DLP Frontierland. And below another aerial shot of DLP Big Thunder. A great one as it shows almost all of BTM track!

One of the most gorgeous aerial shot of DLP ever done showing the whole Frontierland! Click to enlarge the picture.

On this next shot, the Disneyland Paris railroad is entering Adventureland and passes in front of Indiana Jones Temple du Péril.

Talking about Indiana Jones Temple du Péril here is another picture showing the temple seen from above.

Let's stay in Adventureland with this great aerial picture of Captain Hook's pirate ship and Adventure Isle.

Let's move now to Fantasyland with this beautiful sunrise shot showing the back of Sleeping Beauty castle.

Another fantastic picture showing a big part of Fantasyland with also the Disneyland Paris railroad passing by.

Now, you need to know that all these great aerial pictures that you will find in the book are reproduced on full double pages ( or full page for the vertical shots ) which makes them even more spectacular when you're reading the book as each double page is 31 X 46 cm!

And when we didn't had pictures of Yann Arthus Bertrand, like for instance for Discoveryland, you'll find spectacular pictures like this one showing the Nautilus and Space Mountain, also reproduced in the book on a double page.

However Yann Arthus Bertrand also did aerial shots above DLP hotels and came back with some great ones like the one below showing the Newport Bay hotel which is reproduced on a double page in the chapter about DLP Hotels and Disney Village.

By the way, whether it is an aerial shot or not, each time a picture deserved to be on a double page you'll find it in the book. A good example is this next one, a stunning night shot showing the Main Street Electrical Parade in front of Sleeping Beauty castle.

So, you see, in addition to the 250 WDI renderings and the hundreds of others great pictures of the park, as well as a great text telling all the story of the making, the Disneyland Paris book has even more to offer than you might have thought. All the pictures you've seen above are of course include in the Disneyland Paris, From Sketch to Reality book, and if you don't own the book yet, you now understand why it is such a great book.

And, good news, as until August 30 i do a special summer offer on the book which not only include a 20% discount on the regular price but, also, each one who will place an order will receive a special gift - and it's a great one! Below, you can see a video showing the whole book and to know more about the book and how to order and send your payment please go HERE , or send me an email at: neverlandeditions@gmail.com , or use the Paypal one-click purchase button below, right under the video!

Why the Disneyland Paris Book is Great - Part One : The DLP That Never Was

As the Author of Disneyland Paris: From Sketch to Reality, I had access to thousands of images and concept paintings from Imagineering. The book include 500 pictures of the park and 250 WDI renderings, all showing lands, rides, park shops and restaurants which WERE built at DLP, but what you may not know if you don't own the book yet is that it also include pictures of what WASN’T built but envisioned by DLP Imagineers, in two words the "Disneyland Paris that never was". In this article, I will tell you more about a less known angle of the book – and a very interesting one – the part of it which talks about the Disneyland Paris wasn’t built. And I think you’ll find that many of these ideas were really good and should have been built!

In the first image above – that you will find in the book’s first chapter – you’ll see a “winter” version concept showing the Fantasia Gardens, in front of the Disneyland Paris hotel located at the entrance of the park. Disneyland Paris imagineers have drawn a small frozen lake on which guests could have ice-skated.

On the next image below – done by Disney legend Collin Campbell – you’ll see Imagineer Eddie Sotto’s design of the 1920′s Main Street concept. In this version, Main Street would have had an elevated tramway and the train station would have looked just like the one in the movie “Hello Dolly!”. The Emporium was to be behind the elevated train station so exiting guests would be let out into the upper floor of the store and trickle down. The Gas Station was to be where the Firehouse is currently located. And the reason why a Service Station was put into the project was because in the 1920′s the transition from horse-drawn streetcar to automobile had already been made and the automobile had won.

A year after Michael Eisner had declined this 1920′s design, he said to Eddie Sotto that he should have done the 1920′s idea anyway because it would have been understood better in Europe. But, by then it was unfortunately too late…

The painting below was created by Nina Rae Vaughn. Behind The Town Square East block of buildings, Eddie had envisioned a private restaurant for the sponsors of the park. This idea was first pioneered with Club 33 at Disneyland and this one had a secret entrance underneath the railroad station that would lead to a hidden terminal, and in that terminal there would have been an American-style streamlined locomotive train complete with dining cars, inspired by the famous “20th Century Limited”. Imagineers thought this could be the most unique private restaurant in Europe.

Disneyland Paris’ Sleeping Beauty Castle is acclaimed as one – if not THE – most beautiful castle of all Disney Magic Kingdoms, but did you know that others concepts were also envisioned? In the first one below, a remarkable Herb Ryman painting on which you’ll also see the elevated tramway on the right. Herb had designed a DLP castle close to the original one at Disneyland…

…On this next rendering by Tim Delaney you’ll see a very different castle concept, a futuristic one!

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril is a great DLP Adventureland roller coaster ride with an Indy theme, but some of the scenes envisioned by WDI Imagineers were unfortunately cancelled, like the great one below in which the train would have entered a tunnel through the mouth of a giant stone head!

Talking about this Indy temple, another rendering that you will find in the book, reveals that DLP Imagineers had envisioned not one but TWO temples, with two different coaster tracks. Look closer at the artwork below and you’ll see the second temple in the back.

In Fantasyland, Alice’s Curious Labyrinth is a Disneyland Paris exclusive, and guests must find their way through the maze to reach the Queen of Hearts castle. In which they can climb to the upper floor and have a unique view of DLP Fantasyland. But, what was also envisioned was to have a slide for young kids to go back to the “ground floor”, and children would have exited the slide by going through the mouth of the Queen of Hearts! Actually, the slide – without the head of the Queen of Hearts – was built and was operational for a few months after opening before being permanently closed because children were hurting themselves at the bottom of the slide.

DLP Discoveryland as well had others concepts than the one currently built. On this next artwork, you’ll see a very different Tomorrowland entrance than the one which currently exists.

But, of all the Discoveryland concepts that never were, the most spectacular would have been Discovery Mountain, a unique new version of Space Mountain! On the first artwork below you’ll see a great Tim Delaney painting showing Discovery Mountain at night. The transparent tube on the left would have been a direct access tunnel from Videopolis. If you visit DLP, you can still see on the upper floor of Videopolis, giant circular windows which are the same ones through which the transparent tubes would have linked Videopolis to Discovery Mountain.

Inside Discovery Mountain, guests would have found not only a unique Space Mountain ride but also the Nautilus submarine floating in a lagoon with a restaurant inside Captain Nemo’s Grand Salon, access to Star Tours, former Cinemagique attractions and also a “Journey to the Center of the Earth” attraction. The Journey to the Center of the Earth attraction would have been totally different than the one built at Tokyo Disney Sea. In fact, it was the first free fall ride designed by WDI, before the Tower of Terror concept! All of Discovery Mountain would have been a giant tribute to Jules Verne.

So, you see, in addition to hundreds of gorgeous pictures of the park, as well as WDI artwork and a great text, telling all the story of the making of the park, the Disneyland Paris book has even more to offer than you might have thought. All the renderings you've seen above are of course include in the Disneyland Paris, From Sketch to Reality book, and if you don't own the book yet, you now understand why it is such a great book, as it not only tells you the story of the making of what actually exist in the park but also shows never seen before concepts of the DLP "that never was".

And, good news, as until August 30 i do a special summer offer on the book which not only include a 20% discount on the regular price but, also, each one who will place an order will receive a special gift - and it's a great one! Disneyland Paris Book "From Sketch to Reality" : The Readers Comments !

As you know the Disneyland Paris book was released one month ago in it collector's edition and i did may updates all along it's re-publishing. As i'm one of the two authors of the book i'm not of course in the best place to talk about it. But those who are are the one who ordered the book and just received it. Many of them left a comment on the book site and i thought that it will be interesting for those of you who are not totally decide yet to place an order to have a read of what those who have the book in hands think about it.

By the way, both english and french collector's edition are still available and you can learn more about the book HERE for the english edition and HERE for the french edition.

We begin by the comments one english about the english edition/

From Abigail:

If you like Disney I recommend you to buy this book. Everything about DLP is in it. It's an absolute MUST HAVE for your collection

From Michael:

Last year I was really kicking myself that I hadn't bought this book when I had the chance. It was almost impossible to get anywhere and if you found a second hand one it was vastly over priced.
It was simple; if you were anything more than a passive visitor to Disneyland Paris it was the only book to have.
The Disney parks work, and are loved, because of Disney's attention to detail. What makes this book work? Simple, attention to detail. Love the park? Love this book!
Alain, Didier, thank you.

From Guy:

You only have to like Disneyland to love this book. It's absolutely gorgeous! I just got the book a few days ago (the packaging was great, and the shipping really fast), and I already spent hours and hours reading the book and looking at the beautiful photographs. If you're not sure whether you should buy the book or not; please do it! You won't regret it, I promise!

From Anonymous:

Truly the Best Disneyland-Book I ever buyed - and I think I have a lot.
Thank You so much for this great work. If You like Disney I recommend You
to by this book. If You love Disneyland Paris it´s a must have.
It´s more worth than the money.

From Walter M:

The pictures and video in this article just portrait a very tiny bit of the beauty this book treasures inside: the detail of the printing is fabulous, the quality of the paper is excellent and the lithographs are a nice addition to this already perfect documentation of Disneyland Resort Paris.

From Dirk:

Best book of disneyland i've ever see, don't miss it.

From Anonymous:

Alain,

Just wanted to drop you a note that I received my Disneyland Paris From Sketch to Reality yesterday. WOW!! WOW!! This is an amazing book, and I proudly add it to my Disney collection. The book alone is beautiful, but the pictures, the writing. Love it!

From Robby Clay:

Hello Alain,
I recieved my book today and its far better than I ever expected. I've already read through page 100, and I can't wait to finish the rest. Thank you so much for releasing the book again. It makes the perfect new addition to my collection of Disney park books and videos. As an aspiring Imagnineer, getting a behind the scenes perspective of how the magic is made is the ultimate treat. It helps me gain a greater appreciation for what the Imagineers do. I look forward to any future releases you may also have and of course the next update to disneyandmore. Thanks again and much admiration.

Robert

From Pascale:

A High Quality and magical Book that brings all your Disneyland Paris memories back to life!!

From Steve K:

For those of you that don't have this book, you must get it if you have any interest in Disney Parks (which I imagine most of you do since you come to this site). By far the best book on Disneyland Paris and easily one of the top 2 or 3 books on any Disney Park...the others being The Nickel Tour and Disneyland: The Inside Story.

Disneyland Paris Book Update !

That's it, we will receive from the printer all copies of the Disneyland Paris book in a few days and starting early next week we will ship all pre-orders and the book will be available for immediate shipping! And to celebrate this, I've created a new site all dedicated to the Disneyland Paris book. It's the official web site of Neverland Editions, the company who is publishing the book and you will find there the same infos that you found before on Disney and more. The site looks quite like D&M, so you will feel at home! The url is: http://neverlandeditions.blogspot.com/ and if you forget the link in the future, come back on D&M as the book links on the top of the right column are now directly linking to the new site.

The book is always available in both english or french edition, and to make things even more simple for those of you who want to order the book there is now a "one click purchase" Paypal button available! And if you're really hurry and don't need to go through the Neverland Editions site you even have the Paypal button on the right, here, near the top of the right column - or right below.

As we know, a good news never come alone, and i am pleased to tell you that we have found a great packaging to ship the book and make sure that it will arrive in perfect condition - hey, isn't that the most important? So, not only the book will be rolled in four feet of BulPack ( plastic bubble ) but then we will put it in the same kind of box than the one that you can see below ( except that the box will be brown and not white ) with plenty of specially designed anti-shock foam inside. With the foam and rolled in the plastic bubble, and the cardboard box itself, the book should arrive in perfect condition. ( Note: the picture below coming from the seller site shows another item inside the box, not the DLP book ).

The special price on the book at 100 euros is still going on, whether it's a french or english edition and the shipping is 15 euros only whether you live in France or any other country on the planet!
All Paypal payments - if you don't use the Paypal button - must be sent to the publisher email address: neverlandeditions@gmail.com If you can't pay with Paypal, bank wire transfer are possible.

If you didn't order the book yet, this 20th anniversary year is the perfect time to do it, and i can guarantee you that you will LOVE, literally, this book!

Thanks again to all of you who pre-ordered the book for your trust and patience, this republishing wouldn't have been possible without you!

Disneyland Paris From Sketch to Reality Update : Here is the final Product !

Here is a new update about the making of the Disneyland Paris book and this time it's a "video" update! And this update will interest particularly those who wants to place their order of a collector copy as well as those who have already order the book as i have received yesterday two sample bounded copies from the printer! Also, as you will read below, to celebrate DLP 20th Anniversary the book has a special offer, too.

So, the printer has sent to me last friday ago two bounded copies for a final approval before the books shipping which will happen next week and we expect an arrival of all the copies in Europe as scheduled at the very end of April. Then we will start to ship all the books to anyone who have pre-order it but i will let you know when we will be in shipping mode. Anyway, anyone placing his order now won't have too long to wait now and that's good news also for those of you who kindly placed their order some weeks ago.

I have to tell you that i am extremely satisfied of the printing and final product which is identical at the first printing ten years ago, and i think even better. So i think that everyone will love this new printing!

Now, to celebrate DLP 20Th anniversary the book price will be, during the month of April, back at the original pre-order price, i.e 100 euros and 10 euros for a shipping in France and 15 euros for a shipping in any other country. As usual you can pay with Paypal or bank wire transfer, and if you live in France with a bank check. To place your order please send an email at: neverlandeditions@gmail.com and we will let you know how to proceed to the payment. Although we prefer the full order amount to be paid in one time, if you wish to pay in two times please let me know as this is possible, and it might help some of you who really want to own the book.

So, join me with this video below to discover the final product of both the english and french editions, and right under it another video will show you the whole book which might be helpful for those who have never seen it. To learn more about the book and this collector's edition, please visit the description page HERE.

Disneyland Paris From sketch to Reality Book Printing Special Report !

After one long week of printing i'm pleased to announce you that the Disneyland Paris book "From sketch to Reality" is now finished, each page and cover, etc... has been printed! Thanks to all of you who pre-ordered the book this legendary book is coming back and as promised i have pictures of the printing to show you. I am extremely happy with the printing quality and to tell you the truth this new printing of the collector's edition is even better than the first printing ten years ago. Actually, the pictures are even more sharp!

What you'll see below is pictures of the printed sheets just after they went out of the printing machine. 320 pages takes quite a long time to print and now, the binding process will begin, the pages will be folded, cut, etc... Please also note that because these pictures were shot at the printer on some of them - because of the ceiling lights - there is some reflections, so these pics are posted to confirm you that the printing is now done and you won't be able to judge through these pictures of the quality of the printing which, again, is very good. Once the binding will be done they still have to put manually on each book their number, include the five lithographs of thee Walt Disney Studios artworks, pack everything and ship the books that, as it is scheduled are supposed to arrive at our facility at the end of April.

Something important now: The book is always available in its english or french edition but, as i've said before, the pre-order special price will soon be over and the book price will not be anymore at 100 euros but at its final price of 120 euros, plus shipping. This final price will start March19 which mean that you have one more week to place a pre-order and have a 20% discount. The price was supposed to change on February 15th but i've decided to keep it one more month. But on March 19 the final price will start so i you haven't done it yet please place you pre-order now! As usual you can pay with Paypal and Paypal payment must be sent at: lawrence55@wanadoo.fr
You can also pay with bank wire transfer or, if you live in France with bank check. Please email me at neverlandeditions@gmail.com if you wish to pay in another way than with Paypal. And don't forget to let me know your shipping address!

Here we go with the pictures. Below, a pic of the front and back "end pages".

Below a picture of the cover and the dust jacket. You have another pic of the dust jacket without reflection at the top.

And now, some pictures of the inside pages. You won't see all of them as there was a lot of printed sheets but you'll get the picture.

Some additional pictures showing you more of the printed pages. The white strip on the top of each stack is of course not part of the printing.

As usual you can't see more and read a full description of the DLP book in my presentation article HERE and also on the video below showing the whole book. Again, place your pre-order NOW and get the 20% discount which will end on March 19!

Disneyland Paris, De l'Esquisse à la Création Réédité, et en Edition Limitée Collector !

Note: For the English version of this article click HERE.

NOUVEAU!
